Today we woke up at 5 AM and started on our journey. We stopped within an hour for coffee. I noticed I was feeling very sweaty and cold and that my stomach felt weird. I went to the bathroom and tried to pretend I was okay. I looked around and no one else was sweating and putting their coat on. I decided to stay back for a bit until I felt better and sent Deb on.
After a few more bathroom trips, I decided I may as well be walking, so I took it slow. I walked a few more miles until I reached a small city at the base of a hill that I had planned to taxi past before I felt sick. The climb would take three hours and then there was a descent before we reached our destination for the day.
I grabbed a coffee and spent some time talking with the other people who were catching up to me. Deb likes to stay ahead of others so usually by mid morning the others catch up and it is nice to see them and hear about their night wherever they stayed.
When people were ready to move on, I called a taxi. It is always interesting when I have to have a conversation in Spanish since I haven’t taken a Spanish class in more than 25 years. It usually works out, though and the locals can tell what I am saying.
Thirty euros later (which is a LOT) I arrived at the alburgue we are staying in tonight. I have still been feeling a bit of a bug, so I’m sitting at the local restaurant waiting for her.
Tomorrow begins the section of walking called the Maseta, which is known for sprawling flat long sections with no shade and little to look at. This is the part I’ve been waiting for. I think that ever since I heard of the Camino, I knew this was the section that would change me. I have already had more emotion in the last week than in much longer at home, so we will see.
